About the Project

PROJECT BACKGROUND

In October 2005 the Southern New Jersey to Philadelphia Transit Study, sponsored by the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) and the Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) was completed. This study assessed the feasibility of transit improvements in four areas and proposed transit opportunities for:

  • Southern New Jersey

  • Camden Waterfront

  • Market West (Center City Philadelphia)

  • Philadelphia Waterfront

DRPA and PATCO conducted 67 meetings, including 11 public open houses, yielding 441 written comments from the general public, elected officials, and stakeholders.  In Pennsylvania, comments received often focused on the lack of service from Center City and West Philadelphia to the Delaware Waterfront.  Other participants expressed a desire for greater connectivity between the activity centers along Delaware Avenue/Columbus Boulevard and the sports complex and the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia.  Comments were also received in support of a combined fare media to ease transfers between PATCO and SEPTA services.

In South Jersey, comments received often focused on congestion on key South Jersey routes (Route 42, Route 55, Route I-295) as well as the lack of practical alternatives to driving.

Where We Are Now

DRPA and PATCO are conducting separate but complementary Alternatives Analyses, based on the recommendations identified in the Southern New Jersey to Philadelphia Transit Study. The PATCO Philadelphia Waterfront Transit Alternatives

For more information on the ongoing PATCO Southern New Jersey Alternatives Analysis click here.

Analyses is focused on the evaluation and refinement of the transit options in Philadelphia originally identified in the October 2005 study.

The Waterfront Alternatives Analysis process is evaluating refined alternatives based on those short-list alternatives identified in the 2005 Southern New Jersey to Philadelphia Transit Study. Currently, there are three alternatives under consideration:

  • Alternative PA-1
  • Alternative PA-1 Extended
  • Alternative PA-2
  • Alternative PA-3
